November Nine : The Poem

Paul Celan's Poem, featured in November Nine:

Ein Dröhnen: es ist
die Wahrheit selbst
unter die Menschen
getreten,
mitten ins
Metapherngestöber.

A rumbling,
truth itself has appeared among humankind
in the very thick
of their flurrying metaphors.

Paul Celan was born in Czernowitz, Bukovina, of the Austrian Empire (now Romania) in 1920. After losing his entire family in the Holocaust, he moved to Paris, where he became the most important post-war German-language poet. The memory of those lost in the Holocaust permeates his hermetic poetry. He committed suicide in 1970.
